Factors Influencing Waste Separation Behavior of Khon Kaen Hospital Personnel
Keywords:
Waste Separation Behavior, Hospital Personnel, Waste separation behaviorAbstract
Background: Waste management in healthcare facilities is complex, affecting ecosystems, public health, and long-term societal sustainability. Inadequate knowledge, understanding, and attitudes among personnel lead to substandard waste separation.
Objective: To examine factors influencing waste separation behavior of Khon Kaen Hospital personnel.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 170 clinic service staff and 114 support staff (stratified random sampling). Data were collected via a questionnaire on factors affecting waste separation behavior and analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests.
Results: Most participants exhibited moderate knowledge of waste management (48.94%), followed by high knowledge (43.37%), particularly for general waste (95.07%) and sharps waste (94.01%). Attitudes toward waste separation were high (96.48%), and practices were mostly high (69.72%). Significant associations with waste separation behavior included attitudes (p=0.001) and work experience (p=0.05).
Conclusion: Promoting attitude change toward sustained correct practices, alongside motivation and support systems to mitigate operational barriers, is recommended.
