Abstract

Background: Pneumonia in infants is a severe, life-threatening infection. newborns, with immature immune systems, are especially at risk. nursing care is critical to reduce mortality and prevent complications.

Objective: To study the application of the nursing process in caring for infants with pneumonia and respiratory distress.

Methods: A case study involved two infants with pneumonia and respiratory distress, selected from ward 114/5 at Khon Kaen hospital between january and may 2025. health data were collected using Gordon's 11 functional health patterns and Orem's nursing theory. the five-step nursing process—assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation—was analyzed. care was divided into three phases: critical, intermediate, and discharge planning.

Results: Both infants had congenital pneumonia with respiratory distress. After nursing interventions, they could breathe independently, showed good sucking stimulation, and were free from complications. Parents gained knowledge of infant care. The infants were discharged home. Follow-up showed appropriate growth and development.

Conclusion and Recommendations: Applying the nursing process with family participation led to effective care for infants with pneumonia and respiratory distress. This approach reduced hospital stays and prevented complications.
