Abstract
Introduction: Respiratory distress is increasingly common in preterm infant and lead to respiratory failure.
Objectives: To study the implementation of nursing process in preterm infants with respiratory distress.
Methods: Two cases of preterm infants with respiratory distress were compared using the 5 steps of the nursing process.
Results: Both preterm infants had respiratory distress due to congenital pneumonia and prematurity. They shared 6 similar nursing diagnoses including: 1) respiratory distress due to impaired gas exchange 2) hypothermia 3) Infection 4) risk for inadequate fluid and electrolyte imbalances 5) parental incompetence in adapting with stressful situation and 6) readiness for enhanced child care process: appropriate preterm infant care. Nursing outcomes showed that all problems were resolved. The preterm infants recovered well and were discharge from the hospital.
Utilization: The results of the study were developed into nursing standards, nursing practice guidelines, clinical supervision manual and descriptive research to study the nursing process for preterm infants with respiratory distress
