Most knowledge on depressive disorder was derived from women and based on biological andpsychological models. Only few studies explained depressive disorder on gender perspective. In addition, study on depressive disorder on male patients is scarce. This qualitative study aims to explain experiences of depressive disorder in male and female patients based on a gender perspective. The participants included patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder for at least one year. A total of 30 participants were recruited from out-patient clinics at a psychiatric hospital and a university hospital in Khon Kaen province. Data were collected by in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method, based on a gender perspective. Findings, both female and male patients suffered from traditional gender roles. Women patients also suffered from unequal relationship. The fi ve identifi ed themes related to the causes of depression were: decreasing male gender roles, women are ranked inferior, double roles for women, wives have to surrender and loosing freedom. The fi ndings suggest that gender is related to depressive disorder in both men and women patients. Therapists should discuss with patients about their beliefs on gender roles that are related to depressive symptoms. Encouraging patients to be fl exible in performing traditional gender roles is recommended. How to Cite
