Abstract

This hermeneutic phenomenological studyaimed to describe and explain experiences of familyof critically ill dying patients. Twelve families wererecruited. Data were collected by in-depth interview.Steps proposed by van Manen1 were modified fordata analysis in this study. The findings wereas follows:Informants identified 4 meaning of theirexperience of having someone in the family beingcritically ill and dying including 1) living in suddenand unexpected experience, 2) living in loss and loneliness experience, 3) living in intermediatebetween living and dying experience, and 4) livingwith hope. The response of family members whenknowing that their loved one was in the critical andterminal stage included 1) shock and numbness,2) bargaining, 3) acceptance, 4) anger, 5) hopeless,and 6) denial. The families of critically ill dyingpatients needs included 1) a need for a qualityof care, 3) a need for information about the patients,3) a need for proximity, 4) a need for the patient todie at home, 5) a need for a peaceful death for thepatient, and 6) the need for a waiting room. The findingof this study will be useful for health care providers inplanning to support families to adapt to the dyingexperience and respond to their needs holistically.
