Abstract

This quasi-experiment study aimed to investigate the effect of an empowerment program on sense of coherence in patients with advanced cancer. Sample was patients who were diagnosed with advanced cancer and admitted at Maharat Nakorn Ratchasima Hospital. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 35 subjects. These subjects were then assigned randomly to the experimental group or the control group for 18 and 17 people, respectively. The experimental group received a combination of the usual care and six activities/ intervention of the empowerment program over a period of four weeks, while the control group received usual care only. Research instruments were the empowerment program to enhance sense of coherence for patients with advanced cancer and a data collection form, which included a demographic data recording form and a sense of coherence interview form. The validity of this interview form was .92. Demographic data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. T-test and Chi-square test were used to compare these data. Friedman rank test was used to compare sense of coherence scores within the control group and within the experimental group before, one week after the experiment, and four weeks after the experiment. The comparison of sense of coherence scores between the control group and the experimental group before, one week after the experiment, and four weeks after the experiment was carried out using Mann Whitney U test. The  fi ndings revealed that sense of coherence scores of the experimental group at one week after the experiment and four weeks after the experiment were signifi cantly higher than those before the experiment (p<.05). There was no signifi cant difference between coherence scores of the experimental group and the control group at one week after the experiment (p>.05). At four weeks after the experiment, the experimental group had signifi cantly higher sense of coherence scores than the control group (p<.05).
