This descriptive research aimed to study the factors related to food consumption behaviors among junior high school students in a private school, Phetchabun Province. The sample consisted of 148 junior high school students who were recruited by systematic random sampling. The instruments used in the research were: a knowledge about food consumption measurement, an attitude about food consumption questionnaire, a family care and media perception factor questionnaire, and a food consumption behavior questionnaire. The content validity of the questionnaires was verified by three experts, yielding values for index of item objective congruence ranging from 0.67-1.00 for all items. Reliability test obtained Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for each part of the questionnaires, ranging from 0.63-0.66, whereas the knowledge about food consumption measurement obtained Kuder-Richardson 20 of 0.72. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlation coefficient.
The results showed that the students had a high level of knowledge about food consumption and a good level of attitude towards food consumption. Family care affected food consumption at a high level. The perception of advertising media had a small effect on food consumption. Overall food consumption behaviors were at a good level. When analyzing the relationships between factors related to sample food consumption behaviors, it was found that attitude about food consumption and family care had a low positive correlation with food consumption behaviors (r =.27, p =.001, and r =.25, p =.003, respectively), however knowledge about food consumption and the perception of advertising media were not correlated with food consumption behaviors (r =.02, p =.852, and r =.15, p =.067, respectively). Therefore, the research results can be used as guidelines for organizing activities to promote food consumption behaviors of junior high school students to be more appropriate. Schools and parents should work together to encourage junior high school students to have positive attitudes about food consumption as these attitudes correlate with appropriate behaviors in consuming food according to nutritional principles.
