Abstract

Biliary tract disease in older adults is an important health problem, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is considered the first diagnosis option. This quasi-experimental research (two-group repeated measures) aimed to investigate the effect of a preparatory information and caregiver social support program on anxiety among older adults undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. The sample were 33 older adults undergoing elective endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and their caregivers. They were systematically randomly assigned into either the experimental group or the control group, 16 older adults for the control group and 17 older adults for the experiment group. The control group was given routine information, whereas the experimental group was provided the preparatory information and caregiver social support program for five sessions between February to May 2023. Data were collected using the State Anxiety Inventory Form Y-I (STAI Form Y-I). Verification of the research instruments were done: Reliability test of the State Anxiety Inventory Form Y-I yielded Cronbach’s alpha coefficient at 0.78, and content validity index of the program was 1.00. The data collection was carried out three times: at the day of making appointment, in the morning of endoscopy day, and one day after returning home. Data were analyzed utilizing descriptive statistics and two-way repeated measure ANOVA.

The results showed that the interaction between the method and the duration of the experiment was statistically significant (p<.05). The older adults undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in the experimental group had significantly lower mean anxiety scores than that of the control group in the morning of endoscopy day, and one day after returning home (mean difference=15.37, 95% CI: 13.35 to 17.39, p<.001 and mean difference = 4.89, 95% CI: 3.72 to 6.08, p<.001, respectively)
