Abstract

Renal replacement therapy through continuous peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis can perform certain renal replacement functions and prolong life for older people with end-stage renal disease. However, older people with end-stage renal disease receiving renal replacement therapy may suffer several discomfort symptoms.  Fatigue is one significant symptom interfering activities of daily living. Causes of the symptom included factors associated with aging process in combination with those related to chronic kidney impairment. Fatigue affected older people in physical, psychological, social and economics, as well as spiritual dimensions. Nurses should make a plan and manage fatigue for this group of older people using independent roles effectively. This article presents literature review regarding fatigue and nursing role in fatigue management for older people with end-stage renal disease receiving renal replacement therapy. It also suggests a fatigue management program for this group of older people, which is a part of the study “effects of fatigue management program on fatigue in hospitalized older people with end stage renal disease receiving renal replacement therapy” to be a guideline for nurses to manage fatigue symptoms for the older people to have better quality of life.
