Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to study the relationship between the constructive culture and ethical behavior of professional nurses in caring for older patients. Sample was a group of 469 professional nurses who were chosen by purposive sampling. Research instruments were a constructive culture perception questionnaire and a questionnaire of nurses’ ethical behaviors in caring for older patients.  The questionnaires were verified by three experts. Content validity index (CVI) of the constructive culture perception questionnaire and the questionnaire of nurses’ ethical behaviors in caring for older patients were 0.95 and 0.93, respectively. Reliability test of the constructive culture perception questionnaire and the questionnaire of nurses’ ethical behaviors in caring for older patients obtained Cronbach Alpha Coefficient of 0.92 and 0.94 respectively.

Data collection was employed from 1 January to 30 September 2020. The data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics; including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation; and spearman rank correlation statistics. The results showed that professional nurses’ constructive culture perception and ethical behaviors were at high levels. Additionally, there was a positive relationship between the constructive culture and ethical behaviors in caring for older patients.

Suggestion: Constructive culture should be promoted in nursing organizations to be a mechanism to promote professional nurses’ ethical behaviors and improve quality of care for the older adults.
