Development of behavior promotion program care for pregnant women for preterm labor in Narathiwat province: The results of quasi-experiments

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research, two groups with pre-posttest, was aimed to study the effects of a program to promote pregnant women’s care behaviors on preterm labor pain. The samples consisted of pregnant women with gestational age between 20-32 weeks, who received services at three hospitals in Narathiwat Province in 2022. 90 samples who recruited, who were 30 pregnant women from each hospital. They were randomized into experimental and control groups by lottery, 45 persons per group. As for the program of experimental group, the sample received the following intervention, including knowledge for maternal and child health care, a diary booklet, and handbook for antenatal care. In addition, follow-up visits and surveillance of abnormalities by individual telephone were obtained for 4 times in 8 weeks. While the sample of control group were received the regular hospital antennal care as its usual. Data collections were carried out during period of pre and post interventions in two months. Research tools and questionnaire of knowledge and behavior to prevent preterm labor and behavior to prevent preterm labor, in conjunction with a telephone follow-up, which the content was validity verified by three experts (IOC=0.67-1.00). As for the telephone interviews were tested for inter-retest-eliability at the levels of 0.98-1.00. Pilot study test in 30 different samples were obtained and getting 0.874 of Cronbach’s alpha. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics: including percentage, mean, standard deviation, median, and comparison of between groups, based on paired t test and independent t-test. Nevertheless, Wilcoxon signed ranks test and Mann-Whitney U test were calculated for data with abnormal distribution. The results revealed that the experimental sample group had significantly higher scores for personal knowledge. and preventive behaviors for preterm labor than control group (p<0.05). There was also no preterm labor pain found during the study. It can be concluded that this program for promoting pregnant women’s care behaviors towards preterm labor pain in Narathiwat Province was effective for knowledge enhancing of pregnant women and behavior to prevent the occurrence of premature labor pain and to help monitor abnormal symptoms during pregnancy.
