Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of intravenous fluid administration practice guideline to prevent peripheral phlebitis in the female surgery ward at Chumphae Hospital. Quasi-experimental design was applied. Sample were 78 patients admitted to the female surgery ward who had received intravenous fluid administration and 12 registered nurses. Patient participants were divided into two groups; 39 patients
for control group which were provided standard intravenous fluid administration care, and 39 patients for the experimental group which received care according to the intravenous fluid administration practice guideline.
Data collection instruments consisted of the intravenous fluid administration practice guideline assessment and the professional nurse opinions on the intravenous fluid administration practice guideline questionnaire.
Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics; including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and inferential statistics, including independent t-test and Chi-Square test.

The results showed that the control group and the experimental group showed no significant statistical difference in peripheral phlebitis. Most registered nurses had opinions that the practice guideline was feasible to implement (66.7 percent) and suitable for the organization (66.7 percent) at the most agreeable level. However, most (58.3 percent) were also satisfied with the practice guideline utilization.
