A synthesis of nursing leadership literature from thesis of the master of nursing science program in nursing administration, Faculty of Nursing, Khon Kaen University

Abstract

This research aimed to synthesize of nursing leadership literature from thesis of the Master of Nursing Science Program in Nursing Administration, Faculty of Nursing, Khon Kaen University. The population used in this study comprised 18 published theses in nursing leadership, the Master of Nursing Science Program in Nursing Administration, Faculty of Nursing Khon Kaen University; from KKU e-thesis database between 2000-2017.

The tool used in this study was a theses information record form. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, and content analysis. The results revealed that most researchers were department heads/head nurses. Most studies were descriptive researches and aimed to investigate associations and/or predictive abilities. Transformational leadership based on Bass and Avolio was found as a variable in most studies. The body of knowledge obtained from synthesis found that nursing leadership of the majority of study sample were at high level.

Factors related to/ predicting of staff nurses’ leadership included age, educational level, work experience, leadership training, job satisfaction, work characteristics, emotional intelligence, organizational commitment, and organizational culture. Whereas, factors associated with/ predicting of head nurse s’ leadership were conscientious personality type, leadership training, emotional intelligence, administrative experience, work motivation, administrative behaviors, and conflict management. The study suggested that these relevant factors should be applied to develop and promote leadership of nursing administrators. Further qualitative research studies were also recommended.
