Self-care knowledge management model for the older people of practitioner community

Abstract

         The purpose of this participatory research was to develop and examine self-care knowledge management model for older people of practitioner community. Sample comprised 90 older people aged 60 years or over in Chom Thong Subdistrict, Muang District Phitsanulok Province. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out for six months. Research instruments included 1) semi-structured interview form 2) knowledge bank record form 3) awareness scale and 4) self-care behavior of older people assessment form. Content validity index of these instruments were 0.87, 1.00, 0.85, and 0.94, respectively.

         Quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis technique and inductive analysis. The results revealed that outcomes of knowledge management obtained six practitioner communities and six good practices for self-care of older people; consisting of food, emotion, exercise, disease reduction, environmental health and temptation aspects. Regarding awareness and self-care behaviors of older people, average scores of awareness in self-care of older people increased significantly for all aspects (p<.001). Average scores of behaviors in self-care of older people increased significantly for all aspects (p<.001), except exercise aspects.

         The study findings suggested that the knowledge management process can be applied to promote self-care, raise awareness, and modify self-care behaviors of older people for being healthy. The knowledge management process can create good practices in community from community
