Abstract

This phenomenological study aimed to explore illness representations towards breast cancer among Isan women with the disease. A purposive sampling was used; and, study participants were 18 women diagnosed with breast cancer and living in Nakhon Phanom or Sakon Nakhon Provinces. Non-participant observation and in-depth interview were employed for data collection. Thematic analysis was performed. Findings revealed 5 distinctive representations towards breast cancer derived from participants’ experiences.  “Lump in breast” is described to represent typical characteristic whereas “result from eating or karma” depicts causes of breast cancer.   Time span of having breast cancer is denoted as “living or leaving.”  The participants illustrated notion concerning treatment and control of breast cancer as “maintaining two in harmony.”  Finally, “facing a life changing” signified as a consequence of illness.

Study findings provided information to assist nurses and other healthcare providers, to understand illness representations towards breast cancer made by Isan women living in Nakhon Phanom and Sakon Nakhon Provinces, based on their experiences. The findings are helpful in designing tailored interventions for breast cancer prevention, screening, and treatment for Isan women that are suitable with their social and cultural contexts.
