Nursing care for mother with postpartum hemorrhage

Postpartum hemorrhage is a complication of labor and a major cause of maternal mortality. Therefore, standard and effective nursing care of pregnant women in the stage of antenatal care, labor, postpartum, and discharge preparation will help mothers safe and live a normal life. The objective of this article is to study and analyze nursing care for mothers with postpartum hemorrhage. Two cases of mothers with postpartum hemorrhage were studied at Chalerm Phrakiat Hospital, Burirum Province, Thailand during May 2017 to October 2017. Knowledge of postpartum hemorrhage was studied. Data of case studies were collected from patient’s record and by interviewing and observation. Nursing care for mothers with postpartum hemorrhage in two cases was analyzed by using health assessment of Gordon’s functional health pattern and identifying nursing diagnosis, nursing intervention, and evaluation. Recommendations for nurses are ability to assess postpartum hemorrhage which is mainly caused by uterine atony, laceration of the genital tract, and retained placenta or placental segments. Nurses’ skills of assessment and good decision making will save mothers with postpartum hemorrhage timely.
