Abstract

Cesarean section is one of the factors that cause unsuccessful breastfeeding. Mothers who have undergone cesarean section need to be encouraged for successful exclusive breastfeeding before hospital discharge, which will result in maintaining exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6 months.

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study effects of exclusive breastfeeding empowerment program in mothers undergone cesarean section. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants, which were then divided into two groups by time series, 20 people for each group. The comparison group received routine nursing care and the experimental group received the exclusive breastfeeding empowerment program. Data were collected at Jainad Narendra Hospital between January and June 2019. The research tools included the exclusive breastfeeding empowerment program, a knowledge of breastfeeding test, a perception of breastfeeding empowerment questionnaire, and LATCH (Latch, Audible, Type, Comfort, Hold) score. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Mann-whitney u test, Independent sample t test and Chi-Square test.

The results showed that the experimental group had significantly higher knowledge of breastfeeding (mean 9.00, S.D. ± 0.79) than the comparison group (mean 7.40, S.D. ± 1.05) (p < .001). The experimental group’s perceived power of breastfeeding (mean = 88.45, S.D. ± 4.27) was significantly higher than that of the comparison group (mean= 83.40, S.D. ± 8.48) (p < .024). Number of mothers using exclusive breastfeeding before hospital discharge in the experimental group was 20 cases (100%), which was more than that in the comparison group (13 cases, 65%). However, this difference was not statistical significant (p = .223). In conclusion, exclusive breastfeeding empowerment program can be used as a guideline for effective promotion of exclusive breastfeeding
