Keywords:perineal trauma, perineal laceration, perineal massage, normal labor
AbstractPerineal trauma and laceration are commonly problems in mothers after vaginal delivery. Perineal pain and infection happens frequently among these postpartum mothers. These complications interfere in their daily actives and maternal newborn attachment. Perineal massage in labor could prevent perineal trauma and laceration. Incidence of episiotomy is also decreased through perineal massage in labor. The perineal massage in labor is harmless for both mother and her fetus. The massage could be performed in the 1st stage of labor or the 2ndstage of labor by midwives. The practice of perineal massage in labor is only performed by midwives who are interested. Thus, perineal massage in labor is challenging for Thai midwives to adopt this concept into practice or conduct further study.
