Abstract

Early sexual activity is common among adolescents leading to unplanned pregnancy. Almost 80% of sexually active Thai adolescents have their first sex between the ages of 15-18 years. The significant problem of adolescent unplanned pregnancy is unsafe abortion, which is 100 times higher than safe abortion rate. It was reported that 55% of unsafe abortion were in Asia including Thailand. Of all the abortion cases in Thailand, 40% resulted in severe infection, of which 80% ended up death. It is estimated that there are 1,000 abortion cases per day in Thailand, despite the fact that abortion is illegal. The failures in prevention of unplanned pregnancy lead to high death rate among female adolescents and cost Thailand government 300 Million Baht/year.
