Abstract

Developing and establishing nurses’ potential caring is an essential step toward future-oriented nursing care. This study adopted a technical action research approach aimed to develop nurses’ potential of caring for the end of life patients in a Khon Kaen, North-Eastern Thai, Hospital. The participants were registered nurses recruited by purposive selection. The project was divided into three phases. Phase 1, the analysis of the phenomenon of caring for patients at the end of life by in-depth interviews of 12 nurses. Phase 2, the action phase: 52 nurses from each ward volunteered to participate in a workshop to develop nurses’ potential of caring for the end of life patients. Phase 3, evaluation: Immediately prior and post- tests assessed knowledge, attitudes and practices. Paired samples t-tests were used to compare pre- and post-test results. In-depth interviews of 8 the nurse-participants and 6 head nurses who had been working with the participants at 1 month later were used to illustrate their progress in achieving potential.The results revealed that average score of knowledge and performance of caring for patients at the end of life were statistically significant at .05 level (p-value = 0.007 and p-value = 0.005), but attitude was not different. Nurse-participants reflected that workshop increased their knowledge and attitudes towards in confident and achieving their performance of caring for patients at the end of life. The findings emphasis on the need to improve nurses’ potential to enable them can provide the right and optimal care and ensure that patients will benefit from safe.
