นมแม่นับเป็นวัคซีนแรกของทารก การส่งเสริมการเลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมแม่เป็นกิจกรรมและนโยบายที่รัฐบาลให้ความสำคัญ บทความวิชาการนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อนำเสนอบทบาทของพยาบาลในการส่งเสริมการเลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมแม่ตาม 5 ยุทธศาสตร์ของกฎบัตรออตตาวา ได้แก่ 1) สร้างความเข้าใจแก่มารดาเกี่ยวกับนโยบายการเลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมแม่ 2) ประสานงานกับผู้บริหารหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องในการจัดกิจกรรมส่งเสริมการเลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมแม่ในที่ทำงาน 3) ดำเนินงานร่วมกับองค์กรบริหารส่วนท้องถิ่นในการเสริมแรงทางบวกแก่ชุมชน 4)ให้ความรู้และการฝึกทักษะแก่มารดาหลังคลอดอย่างต่อเนื่อง และ 5) ดำเนินงานวิจัยและผลิตนวัตกรรมการเลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมแม่ที่มีประสิทธิภาพ บทบาทพยาบาลในการส่งเสริมการเลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมแม่จะนำไปสู่เป้าหมายของการมีทารกสุขภาพดีในประเทศต่อไป
