A Study of Nursing Outcome Indicators for Patients with End Stage Renal Disease Undergoing Hemodialysis

Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to identify nursing outcome indicators for patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis using the Delphi technique. Twenty experts participated and were categorized into four groups: seven hemodialysis nurse specialists, five faculty members involved in hemodialysis care, five expert nurses in nursing administration, and three board-certified nephrologists. Data were collected in three rounds. In Round 1, interviews were conducted to identify potential nursing outcome indicators. In Round 2, the data were analyzed using content analysis to develop a structured questionnaire, and in Round 3, the questionnaire was redistributed to confirm consensus. The data were reanalyzed using the median and interquartile range.

The results showed consensus on 50 nursing outcome indicators across seven domains, as follows: 1) safety during hemodialysis 10 items, 2) self-care ability 6 items, 3) hemodialysis adequacy 6 items, 4) vascular access safety 7 items, 5) patient and family satisfaction 6 items, 6) psychosocial health 5 items, and 7) palliative care 10 items. The findings of this study can be used as a tool to evaluate nursing outcomes in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis thereafter.
