The Development of Clinical Nursing Practice Guideline and for the Patients under Investigation or Infected with Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19)

This research and development study aimed to develop and determine the effects of clinical nursing practice guideline for the patients under investigation or infected with Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). The development of the guidelines followed the framework for clinical practice guideline development of the National Health and Medical Research Council in Australia. The clinical practice guideline was implemented among the sample group of 100 professional nurses who worked in 4 wards at a hospital in Bangkok Metropolitan Administration-affiliated University. Research tools were 1) the clinical nursing practice guideline for the patients under investigation and/or infected with coronavirus 2019 2) group discussion 3) in-depth interview and 4) a feasibility assessment form for clinical nursing practice guideline implementation. The content validity index (CVI) ranged from .81 to 1.00. Data were analyzed using content analysis and descriptive statistics.
The findings revealed that the nursing practice guideline for caring for patients under investigation (PUI) and patients infected with COVID-19 consisted of three phases: 1) symptom/infection assessment, 2) symptom monitoring, and 3) outcome evaluation. The implementation results demonstrated that: 1) the feasibility of applying the guideline was at a high level, and 2) no incidence of COVID-19 infection was found among registered nurses who implemented the guideline. These findings indicate that the developed guideline was effective and appropriate for implementation in the nursing practice setting.
