Experiences of Being a Nurse Working at a Nursing Informatics Unit, a Tertiary Hospital
Keywords:
Registered nurses, Nursing informatics, Nursing informatics unitsAbstract
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research was to explore the experiences of nurses working in nursing informatics units at a tertiary hospital. Hermeneutic phenomenology of Heidegger was applied as research methodology. The participants being registered nurses who had worked in nursing informatics units for at least three years and voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. A total of 12 participants were purposively selected. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, audio recordings, and field notes. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, analyzed using Crist and Tanner’s Interpretation/Immersion method and presented in the form of themes.
The findings revealed that the experiences of nurses working in nursing informatics units could be categorized into three main themes: 1) Expanding nursing roles and responsibilities 2) Participation in developing nursing-related technologies and 3) Obstacles and challenges in nursing informatics practice. This study highlights that being a nurse informatics requires knowledge in both information technology and nursing. These competencies are integrated to develop programs that benefit healthcare professionals and patients.
