Abstract

This research and development aimed to develop and examine the model for promoting nursing competency in caring for open heart surgery patients on knowledge, nursing skills, and satisfaction. Four nurses were assigned to the cardiothoracic operating room were coached and two nurses in the cardiothoracic operating room were coached. Research instruments consisted of: 1) a competency enhancement model for operating room nurses in caring for patients undergoing open-heart surgery, 2) a knowledge assessment form, 3) a skill assessment form, and 4) a satisfaction assessment form. The instruments were tested for quality, yielding a content validity index (CVI) of .93, a Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20) reliability coefficient of .83 and .87, respectively, and a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .92 and .98, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

The results showed that after participating in the developed model, the participants had an average knowledge score and the nursing skills scores higher than before participating. For the satisfaction, the participants had the high to highest levels. These findings demonstrated that this developed model effectively enhanced nursing knowledge and practical skills, thereby significantly improving the quality of periperative care for patients undergoing open heart surgery.
