Preparation of Nursing Student for Stress Relief during Practice in Delivery Room

Abstract

The study of nursing profession requires theoretical and practical studies in order to be prepared to take care of patients, which causes much stress to the nursing students. The course causing stress the most is obstetrics as it is very complicated. The stress can come from insufficient nursing knowledge and practical skill; patient’s emotion; fear of poor evaluation result from university supervisors and mentors; creating relationship with classmates, teachers and personnel in the team; fear of being reprimanded by patients and their family; fear of causing danger to patients, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the nursing students before practicing in delivery room in order to relieve their stress,
boost their confidence to successfully perform and be well organized as well as able to adjust themselves to their colleagues, university supervisors and personnel in the team. The preparation can be done as follows: stress evaluation, knowledge and skill evaluation, orientation and introduction to the courses at each location of practice, theoretical lecture, teaching by using video, and teaching in midwifery skill laboratory.
