Abstract

This quasi-experimental research examined how a change in health behaviour affected food consumption and exercise behaviour in older overweight patients with coronary artery disease. Forty participants diagnosed with coronary artery disease and admitted for cardiac catheterization at the Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital, Navamindradhiraj University were selected. The patients were equally into experimental and control groups with similar demographics regarding gender and age groups. The experimental group underwent a health behaviour
change programme and while the control group received conventional nursing care. The experimental instrument was a health behaviour change programme with a content validity test. Data were collected through consumption and exercise behaviour questionnaires which were tested for reliability with Cronbach’s alpha at .87 and .80 respectively. Results were analyzed for frequency, percentage,
mean, standard deviation and t-test with major findings as follows:

1. The experimental group showed a statistically significant improvement in food consumption and exercise behaviour than before undergoing the programme at a confidence level of 95% (p < .05).
2. The experimental group showed a statistically significant improvement in food consumption and exercise behaviour than the control group at a confidence level of 95% (p < .05).
