Comparison of Complications of Teenage pregnancy and Adult pregnancy at Sanpatong Hospital, Chiang Mai.
Abstract
Background: Teenage pregnancy is an important problem of the world, because it impacted to economy, social and especially induced maternal and neonatal complications during pregnancy and labor.
Objectives: To compare complications during pregnancy between teenage mother (age less than 20 years) and adult mother (age 20-34 years).
Methods: This study is retrospective analytic cohort study, devided mother into 2 groups, 331 teenage mothers and 2,210 adult mothers. Both groups were admitted and delivered at Sanpatong hospital during July 2014 to June 2019. Obstetric and neonatal complications were collected during antenatal to postpartum. Data were presented as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and were analyzed by Independent t-test, Chi square, Fisher’s exact test and Relative Risk with 95% confidence interval.
Results: The study found that teenage pregnancy had significantly higher rates of anemia (RR 1.52; 95%CI 1.25-1.85), preterm delivery (RR 2.40; 95%CI 1.58-3.65), and neonatal low birth weight (RR 1.95; 95%CI 1.36-2.82). Teenage pregnancy had significantly lower rate of gestational diabetes mellitus (p 0.003). Intrauterine growth restriction, oligohydramnios, placenta previa, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, premature rupture of membrane, meconium stain fluid, retained placenta, postpartum hemorrhage, apgar score less than 7 at 1 and 7 minutes were not significant different between the two groups.
Conclusion: Teenage pregnancy has increased risk of maternal anemia, preterm delivery and neonatal low birth weight.
