Factors affecting spontaneous abortion among Pregnant women at Phrao Hospital, Chiang Mai Province

Abstract

Background: Spontaneous abortion still a major health problem.Factors ofspontaneous abortion are important for prevention.
Objective: To determine factors effecting spontaneous abortion before getting pregnant and during pregnancy.
Material and methods: A retrospective descriptive study recruited 43 pregnant women associated with spontaneous abortion during October 2011 - September 2014. The control group comprised 493 pregnant women ending in live births. General factors before getting pregnant and factors during pregnancy were
determined.                                                                                                                                                                           Result:1.General factors before getting pregnant associated with spontaneous abortion included BMI>25kg/m2 (OR=3.25, 95%CI 1.70–6.15, P<0.001) history of previous abortion (OR=2.76, 95%CI 1.46–5.22, P=0.001), and women aged less than 20 years old or more than 35 years old. (OR= 2.75, 95%CI 1.47–5.16, P=0.001) 2.Factors during pregnancy that associated with spontaneous abortion were lack of antenatal care (OR=10.81, 95%CI 4.89–23.88, P<0.001), alcohol consumption (OR=6.33, 95%CI 3.31–12.09, P<0.001), coffee consumption (OR=2.84, 95%CI 1.51– 5.33, P=0.001), sexually transmitted diseases (OR=2.18, 95%CI 1.17–4.08 ,P=0.013), and abdominal trauma (OR=2.01, 95%CI 1.05–3.83, P=0.031)                                                    Conclusion: Factors effecting spontaneous abortion were BMI, history of previous abortion, women aged, lack of antenatal care, alcohol consumption during pregnancy, coffee consumption during pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases during pregnancy, and abdominal trauma during pregnancy
