The flipped classroom model reverses the traditional learning methods by providing
instruction outside of the classroom and moving activities into the classroom. The flipped
classroom encourages students to engage in concepts in the classroom with the guidance
of the instructor. This study’s aim was to assess the attitudes of the students toward the
flipped classroom in pediatric dermatology learning. Self-administered questionnaires were
used to determine the attitudes following the pediatric dermatology class toward the flipped
classroom. The study was conducted among the fourth and fifth year medical students.
The module consisted of three parts: pre-class activities; content material was presented to
students through online learning by using video lecture in the youtube. In-class activities; using
google form to create the spot diagnosis with a multiple-choice question and then the online
answer from the respondent were reviewed and feedback. Self-administered questionnaires
were used to determine the attitudes to the flipped classroom model after the class.
Regarding the opinions of medical students toward the flipped classroom (n=337), the majority
of them have agreed that it develops their self-directed learning skills (89.0%), increases their
individual responsibility (86.0%) provides better retention of knowledge (87.0%) and improves
the students’ comprehension (87.0%). The majority of the students have indicated that the
flipped classroom is better than conventional methods (77.3%) and should implement the
flipped classroom into the clinical years (80.6%). The results indicate that medical students
have an optimistic attitude toward the flipped classroom and can provide better opportunities
in enhancing their self-directed learning skills.
