Abstract

This study was quasi-experimental research that aimed to assess the impact of a Health Literacy program on tuberculosis prevention among the elderly in a community by apply health literacy program in a community of the Department of Health Service Support. The target group was 56 people that more than 60 years old and were representative in Khon Kaen province. The study was divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 28 participants in each group. The tool was 1) A Health Literacy program and 2) A tool to measure health literacy for tuberculosis (TB) prevention. The experimental group received a health literacy enhancement program for tuberculosis prevention, and the comparison group received educational support in the form of pamphlets and education services provided by a public health officer. The study was conducted between January and August 2024. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Independent t-tests and paired t-tests were used to examine differences in mean health literacy, knowledge, and tuberculosis preventive behaviors between the experimental and comparison groups before and after the intervention at a significance level of 0.05.

The results found that the experimental group had significantly higher mean scores for health literacy, knowledge, and TB prevention behaviors compared to the control group, with mean score differences of 24.28, 1.36, and 0.39 points (P-value <0.001, 0.004, and 0.033). It can be concluded that the implementation of the health literacy enhancement program effectively increased the health literacy and TB-related knowledge of the elderly, leading to more appropriate health behaviors. Related organizations should continuously implement health literacy programs for TB prevention and control in the community, so that people have knowledge and understanding, and enable individuals to effectively prevent themselves from tuberculosis.
