The Pesticide Poisoning Report among Farmers: A Case Study in Roi Et Province

Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to investigate the cases reporting of pesticide poisoning among farmers, problems and obstacles in data reporting by using the case study of Roi Et Province. The secondary data were collected using a health database of 43 files from the Roi Et Provincial Health Office during 1 January 2012 - 31 December 2016. The data was collected from 150 health care personals who were responsible for recording and coding ICD10 by the interviewing questionnaire concerning problems and obstacles in reporting cases of pesticide poisoning. The results showed that 370 cases were diagnosed with pesticide poisoning during the study period with diagnostic codes of ICD-10: T60.0-T60.9. Most of them were agriculturists (47.30%) admitted at the community hospital for 54.32%, followed by a health promotion hospital (23.78%). Reported cases from ICD-10 and the secondary code of Y96 and Y97 were 45.14%, and ICD-10 plus the external cause coding of X48 was 17.84% with incomplete code recording. There was no report from occupational and environmental disease surveillance report systems with form report 506/2 in group 10: pesticide poisoning from agricultural activities. Public health personnel responsible for recording and coding diagnosis disease ICD-10 reported for 50.67% on the problems and obstacles in ICD-10 coding for pesticide poisoning. There was one staff available for this duty in the organization for 60.67%. The high level of the reported problem was that staff were responsible for many things, lack of knowledge of occupational disease coding of pesticides poisoning and did not receive training of knowledge in this record. Therefore, there should be a policy on job placement or a person who is responsible for the surveillance of the occupational and environmental diseases, or by promoting the staff with skills in order to be responsible people on the reporting cases of occupational and environmental disease surveillance. The outcome report will affect the completeness and the accuracy of data reporting that is essential for bringing the results of this presentation in order to plan and formulate a national policy on an occupational disease surveillance for planting farmers.
