Abstract

The bone quantity and quality, which indicate density and strength of bone, are the important factors in dental implant treatment. Bone quality can affect treatment plan concerning implant design, surgical plan, wound healing time, pattern of occlusal force on restoration and classification of patient before implantation. Furthermore, bone augmentation before dental implantation in the unqualified bone area can affect the treatment plan in the meaning of appropriate loading time in each loading protocol.

An article search was proceed using the PubMed database with keywords “type of bone,” “bone density,” “bone quality,” “loading time,” and “bone remodeling”. After that, 48 articles were selected. This literature review compiles basic knowledge on the effect of quality of bone to loading time of dental implant, effects of bone density to dental implant treatment success, bone classification, factors affect bone density in individual, definition of each loading protocol and effects of various type of bone to remodeling process of peri-implant bone.
