Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an oral health promotion program on oral health behavior among 12 year-old students in Kosamphi Nakhon District, Kamphaeng Phet Province. Two schools with similar features were selected by purposive sampling as the study groups. The experimental group received an oral health promotion program on oral health behavior for 12 weeks. The controlled group received the routine oral health instruction. The data were collected twice at the beginning and the end of program using tests, questionnaires and plaque records. The data were analyzed by percentage, mean score, standard deviation, independent t-test and paired sample t-test.

The results revealed that after receiving the oral health promotion program, the experimental group had significantly higher mean score for oral health care knowledge, self-efficacy recognition and behavioral performance of simple oral examination and significantly lower plaque score than before receiving the program and control group at the 0.05 level. The experimental group had also significantly higher mean score for behavioral performance of correct tooth brushing method at the 0.05 level, but it is not different to control group.

The findings of this research have proved that an oral health promotion program could improve mean score of oral health care knowledge, self-efficacy recognition and behavioral performance of simple oral examination. It could also reduce plaque scores among 12 year-old students in Kosamphi Nakhon District, Kamphaeng Phet Province.
