Abstract

Background: The requirement for physical therapy in patients with parkinson’s disease (PD) has increased. Physical therapists face the problem of not having the appropriate tools to assess movement in PD patients. Therefore, the researcher has developed a Chula Parkinson Mobility Scale (Chula-PMS) to assess the mobility of PD patients.
Objective: To develop an instrument to assess and guide the rehabilitation of mobility in PD patients.
Methods: After testing the validity of the content of Chula -PMS by 5 experts. 7 physical therapist subjects used the Chula-PMS to assess the mobility of 5 PD patients to calculate the validity and reliability of the Pearson correlation coefficient. The mobility of 34 PD patients was assessed during the Hoehn and Yahr stage, Barthel ADL Index, Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS-III), and Chula-PMS by the researchers. The data was used to calculate the correlation between the instruments.
Results: The Chula-PMS showed high correlation with the Barthel ADL Index (r = 0.71, P = 0.001), Hoehn and Yahr stage (r = - 0.83, P = 0.001) and Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale Part 3 (r = - 0.86, P = 0.001).
Conclusion: Chula-PMS had a high level of validity and reliability for the assessment of PD.
