Effect of therapeutic art on improvement of self-esteem and self-control of former inmates at the Christian Prison Ministry Foundation

Abstract

Background: The former inmates have previously been shown to have low level of self-esteem and self-control. Accordingly, they break the law repeatedly and struggle in attempt of adapt themselves in daily life. Self-esteem and self-control are important characteristics that should be improved by participating on activities in the Christian Prison Ministry Foundation.
Objectives: The purpose of this experimental research was to study the effect of Therapeutic Art on improvement of self-esteem and self-control among the former offenders.
Methods: Twenty-two former offenders were randomized by Random allocation into experimental group and control group for 11 in each group. The control group received usual activities program while the experimental group received art therapy program 10 sessions for 10 weeks. This study used 3 questionnaires including general information questionnaire, Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory Adult Form and Self-Control Scale (Thai version).
Results: The findings of this study showed that there was a significant increasing in the mean scores of self-esteem and self-control of the former inmates after receiving art therapy (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05 respectively). The control group receiving usual activities program of the foundation had no significantly higher mean scores of self-esteem and self-control than that before study. The art therapy group showed significant improvement of self-esteem and self-control compared with the control group (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Self-esteem and self- control can be improved. Art therapy can be effective in increasing self-esteem and self-control.
