Burnout is not a disease, but an occupational phenomenon

Abstract

Burnout is an occupational phenomenon resulted from prolonged and excessive exposure to unmanaged stress. It is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and decreased personal achievement. It negatively affects persons and their organizations by decreasing productivity and motivation, but increasing helplessness and hopelessness. This article addresses causes, assessment, symptoms and signs, and prevention and management of this phenomenon.
