Motivation to change smoking behavior of smokers at the Check - Up Clinic, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital

Abstract

Background: Related factors associated with motivation to change smoking behavior are very important to help smokers quit smoking and get better life. Completing the knowledge in this field will be useful in the future.

Objective: To explore motivations to change smoking behavior including related factors among smokers at the Check - Up Clinic, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.

Methods: The data were collected from November 2016 to April 2017 at the Check - Up Clinic,
King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. A total of 83 participants were recruited. The instruments
consisted of SSADDA, FTND and SOCRATES-S. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t - test.

Results: Most of subjects had the low level of motivation to change their smoking behavior and were on the precomtemplation stage. Participants had low level in ambivalence dimension and had the lowest level in recognition and taking steps dimension. Related factors with statistically significant to motivation to change smoking behavior included age more than 50, poor health status and high nicotine dependence.

Conclusion: Information on the association may be benefit for organizations to enhance motivation to change smoking behavior and help smokers to quit smoking.
