Factors Related to Oral and Dental Health Care Behaviors of the Elderly in Muang Sam Sip District, Ubon Ratchathani Province

Abstract

Tooth loss is an essential problem in the elderly and is found majorly affecting the elderly population. Consequently, the elderly have faced with the impacts of oral and dental health difficulties. An understanding of oral and dental health care behaviors is nailed the problems and be able to establish health promotion for the elderly. In this study, the cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to identify the related factors that affected to oral and dental health care behaviors among the elderly in Muang Sam Sip district, Ubon Ratchathani Province. There were four hundred and nine participants which had been chosen through the systemic random sampling technique from Muang Sam Sip district. The questionnaire was used for data collection.  The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, and Pearson correlation coefficient.  The results revealed that the studied participants had the oral and dental health care in moderate level ( gif.latex?\bar{X}= 1.78, S.D. = 0.37). This result was significantly related to four factors and behaviors of oral and dental health care.First, demographic factors that relating to dental care behavior were gender (X2 = 7.46, p-value =0.024) and average monthly income (X2 = 13.82, p-value = 0.029). Second, enabling factors also were related to oral and dental health care behavior: knowledge of oral and dental health care (X2 =10.05, p-value =0.004); attitude of oral and dental health care (r = 0.31, p-value = 0.000); and belief of oral and dental health care (r = 0.35, p-value = 0.000).  Third, supporting factors, oral and dental cleaning equipment (X2 =96.96, p-value =0.000); and dental service (X2 = 31.77, p-value =0.000), were related. Lastly, adding factors, support from individuals (X2 = 0.39, p-value =0.000); receiving information from various sources (X2 = 7.89, p-value = 0.011); and contents related to oral and dental health care (X2 = 20.73, p-value = 0.000) were related. Based on the study, the mentioned factors are significantly related to oral and dental health care behaviors. With the results of this study, it will be beneficial for concerned parties or persons who need the basic information for planning a program to promote oral and dental health care among the elderly in Muang Sam Sip District, Ubon Ratchathani Province in the future.
