Self-esteem and quality of life among the elderly during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may increase health risks in the elderly, both physical and mental, which lead to stress, low self-esteem, and a decreased quality of life. This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to study the perception of self-esteem (SE) and quality of life (QoL) and the relationship between the perception of SE and QoL among the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample consisted of 342 elderly people aged 60 years and over. Data were collected using perception of SE and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief–Thai (WHOQOL-BREF-THAI). The Cronbach's alpha values of the SE and WHOQOL-BREF-THAI assessment questionnaires were 0.71 and 0.87, respectively. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. The results of the study showed that most of the elderly had a perception of SE at a high level ( =2.81, SD=0.79) and had all aspects of quality of life at a moderate level (
=3.39, SD=0.81). Moreover, it was found that perception of SE was associated with QoL among the elderly with statistical significance (p<.01). Therefore, during the COVID-19 pandemic. relevant agencies should organize promotion activities to build SE and improve the QoL for to life happiness in the elderly.
