Perceived risk of falling and fall prevention behaviors in older persons with osteoporosis

Older persons are at risk of osteoporosis. Predisposing factors of fractures in older persons included a perception of risk of falling, fall prevention behaviors, and some personal factors. The purposes of this study were to examine perceived risk of falling and fall prevention behavior among older persons with osteoporosis, and to determine relationships among persons factors, perceived risk of falling, and fall prevention behaviors among older persons received services at an orthopedic clinic in a tertiary hospital in Chiang Mai province. The purposive sample comprised 306 older adults with osteoporosis. Data were collected from August to November 2021.The research instruments included a demographic data questionnaire, a perception of risk of falling questionnaire, and a fall prevention behavior questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation coefficient. The results of this study revealed that an average perceived risk of falling score was at a high level ( =68.86±12.00), and an average fall prevention behavior score was also at a high level (
=92.52±10.11). There were significant low positive relationships between perceived risk of falling and fall prevention behavior (r=0.31, p<0.001), and educational levels were correlated with perceived risk of falling and fall prevention behaviors (r=.13, p<.05; r=.11, p<.05, respectively) The result of this study can be used to plan for enhancing risk perceptions and fall prevention behavior among older persons as well as their families to prevent falls in older persons with osteoporosis.
