Development of a nurse fompetency Framework in caring of patients with multidrug-resistant organisms, Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital

The purpose of this developmental study was to develop a nurse competency framework in caring for patients with multidrug-resistant organisms at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital using Marrelli, Tondora, and Hoge’s competency framework development process (2005). The samples consisted of 14 nurse specialists and 6 experts. Samples were chosen using purposive sampling. There were five research instruments including: 1) a competency record form, 2) a demographic data form, 3) a semi-interview guide, 4) a competency evaluation form, and 5) a voice recorder. Data collection included reviewing the relevant literature, interviewing nurse specialists. Data were analyzed using content analysis and item content validity index calculation. The results of this study revealed that the nurse competency framework for the care of patients with multidrug-resistant organisms at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital consists of six competencies with 59 competency behavioral indicators, as follows: 1) screening and surveillance of patients with multidrug-resistant organisms (6), 2) prevention and control of multidrug-resistant organisms (15) , 3) care management of patients with multidrug-resistant organisms (13), 4) communication and coordination for patients with multidrug-resistant organisms (5), 5) nursing care for patients with multidrug-resistant organisms(15) , and 6) improving knowledge and quality of care for patients with multidrug-resistant organisms based on knowledge management principles and empirical evidence (5). Nurse administrators can use this competency framework to evaluate the competency of nurses who provide nursing care for patients with multidrug-resistant organisms, analyze needs for development and training, evaluate performance, and to establish a plan for improving nursing competencies in providing nursing care for patients with multidrug-resistant organisms at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital.
