The development of computer assisted instruction on patient requiring ventilator care for the third year nursing students

This quasi-experimental study was conducted with the purposes to compare 1) the pretest- posttest mean knowledge score regarding nursing care of patient on mechanical ventilator of experimental group receiving the Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) 2) the pretest- posttest mean knowledge score regarding nursing care of patient on mechanical ventilator between experimental group receiving the CAI and control group receiving a normal classroom instruction, and 3) to assess the students’ satisfaction of the CAI regarding nursing care of patient on mechanical ventilator of experimental group. The samples were 90 third year nursing students of Faculty of Nursing at Surat Thani Rajabhat University in academic year 2018. The samples were conveniently divided either into the experimental group (n= 45) or the control group (n=45). The instruments comprised of 1) the CAI regarding nursing care of patient on mechanical ventilator, 2) the knowledge test regarding nursing care of patient on mechanical ventilator, and 3) the CAI satisfactory inventory, which was developed by the researchers.The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics: mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, and paired t-test. The study revealed the following results. The mean knowledge scores regarding nursing care of patient on mechanical ventilator of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group (p<.001). There were not significant differences in the mean knowledge scores regarding nursing care of patient on mechanical ventilator at the pretest- posttests between experimental group and control group, and the students’ satisfaction of the CAI regarding nursing care of patient on mechanical ventilator was at a high level. The study results suggest that the CAI regarding nursing care of patient on mechanical ventilator should be used in order to integrate with the usual teaching style to support self-directed learning of nursing students.
