Development of thalassemia screening wheel innovation for pregnant women

Abstract

This research and development study aimed to develop an innovation for thalassemia screening and examine the effectiveness of the innovation on the confidence and satisfaction of Thalassemia risk-partner screening among nursing students. The research method was divided into four steps including: 1) reviewing the Thalassemia screening theory and concept, 2) developing the pregnant women Thalassemia screening wheel, 3) examining and evaluating the pregnant women Thalassemia screening wheel by experts and, 4) evaluating the effectiveness of the pregnant women Thalassemia screening wheel on the confidence and satisfaction among nursing students. The sample consisted of three thalassemia screening experts, ten maternal infant and midwifery nursing teachers, and 89 third year nursing students who enrolled in academic year 2018. Data collection tools included an innovation evaluation questionnaire, a confidence on Thalassemia screening, and a satisfaction on the pregnant women thalassemia screening wheel. The statistical analysis was done using descriptive statistics and a paired t-test. The results showed that thalassemia screening wheel had appropriate contents, clear language, and convenient for use. Overall, the evaluation score of innovation was in high level. Effectiveness of the innovation regarding confidence of use after using this innovation increased significantly at p<0.05. Moreover, the samples had high level of satisfaction on the pregnant women thalassemia screening wheel. Therefore, the thalassemia screening wheel innovation for pregnant women should be applied in screening thalassemia risk partners to promote confidence in pregnant women care.
