Abstract

The objectives of this descriptive research were to: 1) study caring behaviors in practical teaching of nursing instructors by their perception, 2) study the caring behaviors of nursing instructors by nursing students' perception, and 3) compare such behaviors of nursing instructors by their perceptions and nursing students. The study sample comprised of two groups: 1) the population of 50 nursing instructors who have practical teaching experience, and 2) 167 nursing students of the Bachelor of Nursing Program in 3rd and 4th year who are studying in the academic year 2022 at the Faculty of Nursing, Naresuan University. The students were systematically randomly selected by student identification numbers. The research instrument was the questionnaire of caring behavior in practical teaching of nursing instructor developed from Watson’s theory of human caring. This scale has 51 items representing 10 dimensions of nursing instructors’ caring behaviors in practical teaching. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients perceived by nursing instructors and nursing students were .96 and .98, respectively. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test. The results revealed that the caring behaviors in practical teaching of nursing instructors by their perception was at the highest level ( x-  = 4.56, S.D. = .32) in overall. On the other hand, nursing students' perception of caring behavior of nursing instructors was at a high level ( x- = 4.15, S.D. = .51) in overall. The caring behaviors of nursing instructors by their perceptions and nursing students significantly different (p < .001). Therefore, applying effective communication strategies about the caring behaviors of nursing instructors will be effective in achieving the same recognition.
