Abstract

Road accidents cause injuries, disabilities, and loss of life. On January 11, 2024, the Nopparat Center in Krabi Province received reports of an accident involving a school van that lost control and overturned into a ditch across the opposite lane on Rural Highway No. 5036 (Rural Highway Junction KB.6022 - Lang Sord Pier). The investigation team from Koh Lanta Hospital, along with a multidisciplinary team from related agencies in the province, went to the site to investigate the accident in order to determine the causes and factors related to the injuries and fatalities resulting from the incident. This descriptive study involved interviewing relevant parties, surveying the accident site, collecting data from patient medical records, and analyzing factors contributing to injuries and fatalities using Haddon’s Matrix. The investigation found that the van had a total of 9 passengers: 6 males and 3 females. There were no fatalities; however, 6 individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to Krabi Hospital, while 3 others suffered minor injuries, received first aid, and were sent home. The factors leading to the injuries were attributed to the driver's behavior of excessive speed, which caused the vehicle to lose control and cross into the right traffic lane, resulting in the vehicle ending up in the roadside ditch.
