Effects of a Health Literacy Promotion Program on Alcohol Consumption Behaviors among Alcohol Drinkers in Ban Mai Sub-District, Sam Phran District Nakhon Pathom Province

This quasi-experimental study with a two-group pretest-posttest design aimed to compare mean health literacy scores, mean alcohol consumption behavior scores, mean alanine aminotransferase levels, and the level of behavioral change between an experimental group and a control group. The sample consisted of alcohol drinkers who were assigned to an experimental group (n = 21) and a control group (n = 21). The experimental group received the health literacy promotion program four times over a four-month period.
The research instruments included a health literacy promotion program, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, a health literacy questionnaire, and a Stages of Change assessment form. The content validity of the questionnaires (CVI) was 0.81. Reliability analysis demonstrated a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.94. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Inferential statistics, including a one-way repeated measures ANOVA and independent t-tests to compare mean health literacy scores, mean alcohol drinking behavior scores, and mean liver enzyme levels between the experimental and control groups.
The results revealed that the experimental group had significantly higher mean health literacy scores than those in the control group (p < .05), and also had a statistically significant lower mean alcohol drinking behavior scores than those in the control group (p < .05). Additionally, 61.90% of participants in the experimental group showed positive changes in health behavior. However, the mean ALT levels of the experimental group after participation in the program did not differ significantly from those of the control group.
