This research aimed to study the effects of promoting self-care agencies based on Orem’s Self-care Theory through brief counseling on blood glucose and blood pressure control among patients with renal impairment. It was a retrospective observational study using medical record data from 120 patients with renal impairment who received outpatient services at a tertiary hospital in the upper northern region of Thailand between October 2021 and June 2022. Data was collected using Data record form consisting of a personal factors and a clinical data. Descriptive statistics and paired t-tests were used for data analysis, with the level of statistical significance set at p < .05. The results showed that six months after receiving individual counseling, the participants’ fasting blood sugar (FBS), systolic blood pressure (BPs), and diastolic blood pressure (BPd) significantly decreased (p < .001).
The findings indicate that promoting knowledge within the framework of Orem’s Self-Care Theory through brief health counseling can enhance self-care competence among patients with renal impairment, encouraging appropriate health behaviors and effectively reducing blood glucose and blood pressure levels. Therefore, this approach is suitable for developing nursing practice guidelines to promote self-care among patients with chronic kidney disease in chronic disease clinics.
