The Effects of Using an Integrated Health Promotion Model to Prevent Dementia of Older People in Nonthaburi Province

Abstract

 This was a Quasi-experimental study which aimed to study effect of using the integrated health promotion model to prevent dementia in older people at Nonthaburi Province. The sample was 40 elderly people obtained from purposive selection. They were divided into an experimental group and a control group with 20 people in each group.
The research instruments used in this study consisted of :1) an integrated health promotion model; 2) a questionnaire assessing knowledge related to dementia ; 3) an assessment tool measuring preventive practices aimed at reducing the risk of dementia 4) a questionnaire evaluating participants’ opinions toward the model; and 5) a questionnaire assessing the utilization and potential for model dissemination. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, including percentage, mean, standard deviation, and content analysis. Comparative statistics were Wilcoxon test for comparison the scores of knowledge as well as practice to prevent dementia before and after experiment of the experimental group, and Mann-Whitney test for comparison the scores of knowledge as well as practice to prevent dementia after experiment of the experimental group and the control group.
The results revealed that 1) after using the integrated health promotion model, the elderly had increased knowledge as well as practice to prevent risks for dementia with statistical significance at .01 level, 2) after experiment, the experimental group had knowledge no difference significance with the control group, however, they had practice to prevent risks for dementia better than those of the control group with statistical significance at .01 level, 3) the experimental group had satisfaction opinion to the integrated health promotion model at the highest level, and 4) the experimental group would take the knowledge as well as practice to prevent risks for dementia in caring themselves and suggestion to other people.
