The Effect of a Coaching Program on The Competency of New Graduate Nurses Working in Surgical Ward
Keywords:
Coaching program, newly graduated nurse competencies, surgical wardAbstract
This quasi-experimental study with a one-group time series designed to compare the competencies of newly graduated nurses working in the surgical ward before, immediately after, and four weeks after receiving a coaching program. The study was conducted over 12 weeks with 13 purposively selected newly graduated nurses. The research instrument was a competency assessment scale for newly graduated nurses, validated by five experts with a content validity index of 0.96 and a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.98. The coaching program was based on the GROW Model and implemented through one-on-one coaching sessions over four weeks. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, frequency distribution, mean, percentage, standard deviation, and one-way repeated measures ANOVA, with a significance level set at .05.
The findings revealed that the competencies of newly graduated nurses significantly increased after receiving the coaching program, both immediately and at the four-week follow-up (p < .05). These results suggest that the coaching program can be applied to enhance the competencies of newly graduated nurses, particularly in surgical wards with similar contextual settings.
